Time goes by...

So, I thought it would be nice to put up some photos from this past month or so. I wish I had more time to write about our lives in these past few weeks, but overall, things are going well. I felt in a bit of a 'funk' for quite a while and I wondered if my 'baby blues' weren't more serious than I'd care to admit, but I feel like I'm coming out of that fog and beginning to feel more present. It's hard to describe, but I've felt like I've been in a bit of a time warp for the last three months. I keep thinking that next month is April :). But perhaps this is how it feels when you are sleep-deprived and going through a major life transition. Everything else in your life (for me, school and work) acts as if life has gone back to normal after your six weeks off, and yet... wow, it takes a long time to adjust and figure everything out. I'm sure all of you mothers out there would say an "amen" to that. :) It's just difficult when you are used to being very productive (that is, in other ways that a mother is demanded to be productive) and then you are suddenly expected to be okay that you can no longer accomplish as much in a day as you used to. There are times that I feel like I get as much done in 2 weeks as I used to get done in one day. Was that hard for anyone else? Perhaps it will get easier. I knew I would need to mourn what life was like before children (as we have to do with many life transitions), but I guess I didn't realize how much I would need to mourn my former 'identity', as it were, as well. ... perhaps God is gently letting me know where not to place my identity?

But, really, Will is such a miracle. As I look into his eyes I feel like I've found a kindred spirit. He's such a loving and happy child, and he simply lights up the room. It can be hard to get up out of the bed when he needs to be nursed, but once I'm holding him I really can't complain. I used to think that Christian and I laughed a lot, but I do believe that the amount of laughter in this house has gone up considerably. I mentioned this before, but it is remarkable to see how everything is so new and exciting to him.

Developmentally, I've noticed that he has begun to 'check' things out with mommy... as in, he will play eagerly with a toy on his bouncer for a while and then begin to look concerned, but once he is able to find where I am at in the room and receive a smile from his mommy, he smiles back and returns eagerly to his toy. :) It's very cute. Physically, he remains a big boy. At his three month vaccination visit (I revised his vaccination schedule a little bit), he weighed in at 17 lbs! Now, that's a big boy :). And, amazingly, he's mostly breastfed (with only the occasional formula bottle once a day). He simply demands a lot of nursing when he is up. Thankfully, he has begun to sleep 9-10 hours straight in the evening (though I wish he would start that sleep sooner than midnight- but I'll take what I can get!) , but that means he takes little or no naps during the day and will cry for nursing every 1.5-2 hrs. Oh, well. :) Perhaps you can see why I can't get much done? Perhaps those of you who have nursed can give me some advise. Should I, during these long sleep times at night, still wake up every 4-5 hours to pump or should I indulge in the sleep myself? Currently, I just go back and forth. I obviously don't want my milk supply to decrease (which it did, dramatically, for a while this past month--though, I thankfully got it back up again), but I also desperately need the sleep. ?? I'm just not sure.

Okay, so photo time!! :) I'll start with the earliest pictures from the past month and go down chronologically (you know, they grow so much at this age). Here he is continuing to grow those neck muscles. (don't mind the pile of papers in the background that we eventually got to :)

And here's a series of pictures I took with Christian and Will. Once Christian comes home from work, Will is generally really excited to laugh with his dad... as you shall see.

Fun, huh? That was instead of having a video on here (I still can't figure out how to get the videos off of our camera and onto the computer).

And here I am with Will. First, we begin by talking to one another ... he can get quite serious about that... and then I try to get him to laugh. :)

Now, these next ones depict what I generally see when I get home from work late on Monday and Tuesday nights. Father and son...

Can you guess what they're doing?

Yes, Christian is playing a computer game and, well, he doesn't look it, but Will is fast asleep.

And here were a couple photos to demonstrate how big Will has gotten (it's hard for those of us who see him day in and day out to notice these things).

As you'll remember, these first photos are when he was just 11 days old...

And these are at 3-3.5 months old...

A happy guy. :) Blessings to you all!

An Easy Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Okay, I admit it, I watch Oprah every now and again. She had a show recently called, "Sandwich Showdown" (I believe that's what it was called), where she had a chef from "Cafe Muse" give out a recipe for a gourmet-style comfort food we have all enjoyed. It's quite easy (once you have the ingredients).

Ingredients:

Nice 'organic' bread (I chose an Asiago Peppercorn bread)
Butter
Havarti cheese
Fontina cheese (I couldn't find this and substituted with Gouda)
Honey
Fresh Basil
Fresh Tomatoes

So, you grill the bread as usual with the butter (I simply put the butter on the pan and placed the bread on top... easier that way) and then you add the cheese and drizzle honey on top. Perhaps you can cut the cheese in a prettier fashion than I managed to do. You have it melt, like normal...

Then you add the tomatoes (which I'm normally not a huge fan of... but it's amazing on this!) and the sliced basil.

And... you've got a great sandwich!!

Enjoy!
